Ashley Davidoff was schooled in Johannesburg in a Jewish day school called King David School from nursery school through primary school and then high school all on the same great campus.  His education and experiences were profound in his youth- and lessons he learned during the early years have stayed with him for life. Through his involvement in the world of dance from the ages of 5 through 14 he learned to appreciate the arts and learned from his mother the discipline required to pursue excellence and the importance of artistic expression.

He was admitted to the University of Witwatersrand medical school in 1970 where he spent the next 5 years before graduating in 1975. It was during this time that he learned of his need to create fundamental principles as a foundation to his education and the concept for the “The Common Vein”, a right brain approach to medical education, was seeded.

After his formal medical education he spent a 6 month internship in surgery under Professor Myburgh, followed by a six month internship in medicine under Professor Zwi at the Johannesburg General Hospital.  At that time he developed an interest in the heart and in 1976 spent a senior internship in cardiology under the guidance of Professor John Barlow at the Johannesburg General Hospital. At the recommendation of Dr Barlow, he furthered his studies in Canada where he did a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto at the University of Toronto under the guidance of Dr Richard Rowe(1977/78), and then entered a second fellowship in pediatric cardiac pathology at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School under the guidance of Drs Richard and Stella van Praagh(1978/79).

It was during this time that his appreciation of the beauty of structure matured since it was part of his function to photograph the heart specimens.

Under the inspiration of the Richard and Stella van Praagh, with discussions and debates that went into the middle of the night, he realised that it was the diagnostic aspect of medicine that really inspired him, and after speaking to a cousin Dr Nat Hyman, a radiologist in Maryland, he decided to enter the field of diagnostic imaging.

In view of his cardiac background he was accepted to do a further two years of fellowship in cardiac and interventional radiology (1979-81) at the Brigham and Womens hospital, Harvard Medical School under Dr Herbert Abrams, and finally completed a residency in radiology at the Brigham and Womens Hospital.

He lost his father in 1983 and decided to take a year to visit his mother in South Africa and advance his interest in art and photography in Europe.  He backpacked around Europe and South Africa with camera and pencil in hand and had his eye on his surroundings and the art of Europe.  At this time his yearnings and leanings to the art world were cultivated. (1984/85)

The next 16 years were spent at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the department of Radiology where he became a clinical professor of Radiology.  The Common Vein became a large part of his educational endeavours.

He met his future wife Naomi Fisher while he lived a life of seclusion in Holliston, a small new England town outside of Boston.  They were married in 1989 and have four wonderful children. They now live in Newton, a city just outside of Boston.

As it became apparent that more time was needed to dedicate to family and The Common Vein, he joined the radiology group at Caritas St Elizabeths Centre in Boston (Tufts Medical School affiliate 2002- current) where for 3 days a week he practices as a clinical radiologist and for the other two concentrates on evolving the Common Vein (thecommonvein.com), and advancing interests in the arts photgraphy and gardening.(thecommonvein.net)

After an exhibit at the Newton Library “The Beautiful Body – Elegance of the Human Form” in October 2009 , a friend Rosita Fine, suggested he take the story of the journey of medicine through art on the road. The exhibit told the story from the cell through conception and development of a ballet dancer to her peak and who then develops cancer.  The value of integrating art and medicine became apparent and Cell to Soul was born.

His most recent endeavour is the creation of an organization that explores the power of the creative arts to express the beauty of the human form in health and disease, and to use the forum to explore the medical journey

Brief Description of the Works

An interest in biology, nature, and creative arts from an early age is culminating in the convergence of these interests as I evolve into adulthood.  The overall work has a philosophical basis that emphasises that underlying complexity there is simplicity.  Parts making up the whole, which becomes more powerful than the individual parts, is a key concept.  The whole however only becomes part of the next and more complex unit.

The Common Vein is a medical electronic educational project that uses images and principles to advance the student from simplicity to complexity in stepwise manner.  Conventional medical images are augmented with colorful artistic renderings that have a variety of functions.  Sometimes they are used portray concepts (a picture speaks a thousand words) and on other occasions they are used to display the beauty of form and function.  Each year I choose one organ to present at the national radiology meeting.   For a solid year I delve into the medical, historical and cultural world of the organ.  The experience is so intense that I am driven to write poetry and create beautiful images of the organ as I learn to admire the wonder of biology and evolution.  The planned exhibit will reveal art and some poetry that reflect my awe and admiration of the world of biology.

My mother taught me the art of expression through dance.  My wife taught me the ultimate expression of  the gift of family with our four children.  As a radiologist by profession and a teacher and artist by nature my daily pursuits are driven by the powerful need to create beauty from the mundane.  I combine my academic career in cardiovascular and abdominal imaging with a passion for creativity, the outlet depending upon the season.  The fall and winter months find me at the reading board and the computer, creating colorful images from radiologic films.  During the warmth of spring and summer my passions spill into the garden, where nature teaches me truth and I combine reality with the fantasy of stone sculpture and sound of water.  My endeavours in family, dance, art, medicine, education, and the garden have kept me inspired and fulfilled.

My father and mother came from poor immigrant families that had fled Lithuanian pogroms against the Jews.
